Whether you are looking for a new hobby or to expand on your musical abilities, there is nothing quite the same as picking up a new instrument. For someone who has been playing for a while, it can be a great way to step away from the norm.

Learning an instrument is easier if you have a musical background, but what if you are only a little familiar musically? Here are a few helpful tips to picking up a new instrument.

Be Patient

No instrument is going to sound as you imagined right from the jump. That is why being patient is the most important part of learning a new instrument. There is an inherent learning curve and it takes time to pick things up.

It can be frustrating to not be proficient on an instrument right away. But most people are not savants when it comes to music, and it takes time to get used to the style and rhythms of the instrument. Be patient with yourself so that you can learn effectively.

Use Your Existing Knowledge

If you know how to play an instrument already, use the technical knowledge that you have garnered from that instrument as your base. While it can be hard to cross from one type of instrument to another, going within families can help for faster development.

For instance, going from guitar to bass can be easier when you utilize your knowledge of that instrument. It will still take time to learn all the finer points but at least you will have the necessary foundation for success.

Group up

There is no better learning experience than pairing up with others who are in the same boat. For starters, there is no musician who knows it all. Having the help of others can be an invaluable way to learn.

Getting into a group with others learning or already knowledgeable in your instrument can be a great way to develop your skills and learn in ways that wouldn’t be possible alone.
