A lot of video games come out each year. And each year, there are seemingly one or two releases that stand above the rest. The industry is crowded and making a game that stands a cut above the rest is harder than it sounds.

But these five games in particular managed to do it. Here are the five biggest video games of the last decade.

  1. Mass Effect 2 & 3 (2010/2012)

Mass Effect is one of the biggest franchises in the video game space and with good reason. Though Mass Effect had a few disappointing endings (there were multiple endings), it is one of the games that still stands the test of time.

  1. Super Mario Galaxy 2

With so many releases, it can be hard to pinpoint a single Mario release. But Super Mario Galaxy 2 managed to follow up the popular first installment, adding a 3D platform which raised the standard for the genre and became known as a masterpiece for Nintendo throughout the years.

  1. Halo: Reach

It can be difficult to pinpoint just one game in the popular Halo franchise, but Reach may be the best of the bunch. There are some who prefer Halo 4, which came out two years later, but Reach may be the best in the space opera shooter series. It explores Master Chief in a way that he has not been explored before.

  1. Portal 2

For those who like a little more puzzle work, there is nothing better than Valve’s 2011 effort. The original Portal was a hit, but the sequel managed to take all of its best features and make them better somehow. It even adds in two-player co-op, making the game fun with friends in a way that the original wasn’t.

  1. Far Cry 3

Far Cry was popular before the third installment, but this is the one that took it above and beyond. It redefined the series while also introducing perhaps one of the best villains in gaming into the fold.
